- Sandal Castle is a ruined medieval castle. In1460, during the Wars of the Roses, Richard Plantagenet was killed during The battle of Wakefield. During the English Civil War Sandal Castle was Royalist.In 1645 it was besieged at least three times by Parliamentarian troops with its fall caused great rejoicing among the parliamentarian forces. The castle was the setting for the opening scene of one of Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 3 (Act 1, Scene 2) .Sandal Hill was a motte-and-bailey earthwork castles with wooden towers on the mound and deep ditches. Sandal is built on a natural sandstone ridge. It has about 28m of prominence so just fails to qualify as a Tump.
