  • Greystoke Castle has been destroyed and rebuilt many times since the first structure in 1089. Destroyed by Cromwell in 1648 after the English Civil War, rebuilt and then destroyed again by a careless maid in 1868 who left a candle burning in a linen cupboard. The estate was commandeered by the army in 1939 as a tank drivers' training ground, with the castle becoming a prisoner of war camp. Today the castle owned by The Howard Family can be hired for weddings and events. Racehorses are trained (by Nicky Richards ) in the grounds - with a newly built gallop made of wood chips. Walked alongside this with L to the craggy top before taking up cycle marshal duties for 7 hours for Race The Sun charity event.
