  • 18/12/14. A wild morning of rain and wind limited us to a short low level 2 hour walk close to our holiday cottage at Great Strickland. As we found a way into the private Lowther Park through two gates in the high deer fence the similarities with Jurassic Park, which we had watched the night before, were disturbingly similar. Thankfully we only saw a few nervous deer watching us. A rough track through a copse ran conveniently right over the top. A new building (barn/ yurt?) was being constructed next to the top (probably for the Kendal Calling music festival held in the deer park every summer). Luckily for us the workers were too busy clinging on to a giant tarpaulin in the gale that they were trying to lash over the half finished roof. We passed an estate worker eating his sandwiches in his tractor who returned our cheery wave, before we excited by the castle. Inspected the earthy Christmas gifts in the Castle shop -declined a taste of toffee vodka - yuk.
