  • Chris Pearson says...
  • Also called Glossop Castle (a much better name). Site of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle. The motte being the piled up earth bank on which a wood or stone wall was built and the bailey being in the inner courtyard. Summit is now a confused maze of bumps and hollows as the earthworks have been damaged by quarrying and the position of the bailey has been lost. Walked up from the lovely Howard Park to the mast from where (over one new fence) a thin path threads through the many bumps to top.
