  • Chris Pearson says...
  • L read her book by a barn whilst I negotiated awkward barbed wire fences and filled my socks with grass seeds vising the summit. Below on the Derwent is the 116-metre S-shaped Calver Weir, one of the earliest structures built in the Industrial Revolution, used to power the waterwheels for cotton-spinning at Calver Mill (part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site). The artificially high water levels upstream from the weir provide a wetland habitat known as the Calver Marshes which is home to rare species such as water voles, kingfishers and dippers.
