Member's Comments on Keppel’s Column...

  • Chris Pearson says...
  • The column was built in the late-18th century to commemorate the acquittal of the court-martialled Admiral Augustus Keppel after the indecisive naval Battle of Ushant (a naval battle against the French fought 100 miles out from the mouth of the English Channel). The column visibly bulges due to an entasis correction,(apparently tall buildings built with straight edges don't look straight from a distance and so a mathematically calculated curvature is built in to the design. In this case the curve is wrong as funding problems reduced the height so it now appears to bulge!
