- Estate cul de sac on edge of Pontefract. The deep, sandy soil makes Pontifract one of the few British places in which liquorice can successfully be grown.The town has a liquorice-sweet industry; and the famous Pontefract Cakes are produced, though the liquorice plant itself is no longer grown there. The town is called 'Ponte'/'Ponty' by its citizens and sometimes jokingly referred to as Ponte Carlo, in reference to Monte Carlo. In 1648–49 the castle was laid under siege by Oliver Cromwell, who said it was ''.. one of the strongest inland garrisons in the kingdom'' Three sieges by the Parliamentarians left the town "impoverished and depopulated"., after so the inhabitants (Royalist sympathisers), fearing a fourth, petitioned Parliament for the castle to be slighted.(demolished) which it was, as in their view, the castle was a magnet for trouble, During the English Civil War many castles such as Pontefract castle were slighted (demolished) by the Parliamentarians to stop them being used by the Royalists.
