- Currently being demolished (May 15) for a cluster of new luxury family homes was HMS Mercury a shore establishment of the Royal Navy Signals School which was established at Leydene House. The school trained generations of Royal Navy Communicators and Navigators until 31 August 1993 when the establishment was decommissioned. Part of it appears to have a new lease of life as a Sustainability Centre and Eco-hostel. Summit field is used by hanggliders, pargaliders and model aircraft fliers -each of whom has to follow complex agreements to avoid each other e.g (from sky surfing club website)Hang gliders can return below this height to avoid bottom landing in difficult circumstances. The condition being that the pilot must exercise the utmost caution and airmanship, in order to avoid collision between him/herself and models, or cause mid-airs between models.
