  • 17/2/15. 10 mile run with L & dogs from Winterbourne Bassett via Avebury. We dutifully obeyed all of the "do not climb signs" and stopped at the viewing point/ info board. This conical grassy mound is a prehistoric artificial chalk mound (would once have been white) being part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site. At 30 metres (98 ft) high, it is the tallest prehistoric human-made mound in Europe and one of the largest in the world; it is similar in size to some of the smaller Egyptian pyramids. Actual purpose unknown and despite two tunnels from the sides nothing found inside. Youtube clip worth watching: Silbury Hill: The hill with a hole, includes Professor Atkinson in 1960s from Cardiff Uni doing this to find just a turf core and nothing buried inside (unlike the pyramids). In 2000 a 40 foot hole appeared on the top (possibly an old shaft from 18th C dug by Duke of Northumberland)twhich was fenced off for safety then filled with expanding polystyrene!! (the lightest substance available) with a chalk covering.
