• This 3 metre point is believed to be the island's natural highpoint. Indeed there is a local history sign at this point (at a road junction) announcing that it is the island's highest point and that the adjacent King Canute pub (now boarded up) was used as the combined operations centre during the infamous North Sea Flood of 1953. The other 3 metre spot height at TQ 80701 83938 is on a manmade raised entrance to a holiday park. Other spot heights higher than 3 metres are all believed to be on top of manmade sea defences which encircle the island. There is also a 16 metre spot height shown on 1:10,000 mapping at TQ 81899 83833 at Canvey Heights Country Park, which according to Wikipedia is the highest land elevation on the island. However this area was reclaimed from the Newlands landfill site that operated there between 1954–89 and is therefore not natural but manmade. Non the less the Country Park is pleasant spot for a walk with good views over the creeks and salt marshes.
