  • Very exciting to find a new Tump ! A start from the layby high on the A6 offers a fine mini-expedition with a plummeting descent to cross the beautiful River Wye upstream from the towering buttresses of Cheedale and a fight through giant rhubarb and other lush limestone species ( in the height of summer) on the little used path climbing steeply to break out into open sheep fields and the summit tumulus in a small wood. Worth strolling 50m N to the fence to see what an open cast quarry looks like (and is responsible for turning this hill into a Tump by excavating the col). Much simpler descent on fp through fields down to Cowdale and back along nasty main road(no path) to the safety of the Monsal Trail and climb back up to layby.
