  • Visited this in 1990. This trig point is located above one of the oil storage facilities, that was constructed during World War II, as part of the Government Pipelines and Storage System. This was a massive top secret engineering project, designed to supply all the airbases in England with aircraft fuel. Because prior to it's construction, it was believed the RAF would run out of fuel within 10 days, once a war began. Basically the oil was unloaded at refineries at Stanlow on the Mersey and Avonmouth near Bristol, and then moved by pipeline across the country. In various places huge storage facilities were constructed deep underground, like the ones here in old salt caverns, which are 200 metres beneath the surface. The oil is still there, and recently Essar Oil who took over Stanlow in 2015, applied to the government to try and extract the millions of gallons of oil that has just been lying here for decades.
