  • Henley Fort is an outdoor centre. Child protection rules for visitors forbid my unbooked presence from being allowed in as there was a school group on site, however the history tutor escorted me up the outer bank to gaze at the trig across the moat and gave me a history overview: Henley Grove Fort which was built during the 1880s as part of the London Defence Positions.(Modern day London -e.g Canary Wharf and The Shard could be seen in the distance) Its purpose was to protect the capital from the French army, but never used. It is the most westerly fort of a 17-mile chain along the North Downs, with forts spaced 5 miles apart.
