Exmoor - Winsford Hill to Tarr Steps Circular

A pleasant walk combining riverside and moorland scenery. From the top of Winsford Hill the route descends from the trig point across the moor to Great Bradley. Take the tarmac drive to the right of the hedge to the private road sign where the path crosses fields to drop through woodland to the River Barle. Follow the Barle downstream to Tarr Steps, the path closest to the river is a little sporty but the most rewarding. Cross the ford on Tarr Farm side (bridge) then climb back onto the moor via Ashway Side to Varle Hill and the minor road. Cross B3223 to join green track which skirts the boundary of the moorland to the Caratacus Stone. Cross lane at Folly to skirt top of Punchbowl to start point. 12.2km, 302m ascent/descent, 2:50hrs. Dartmoor - Sourton Tors and Meldon Viaduct Circular

A flat start along the Granite Way is followed by a stiff climb from the Lake Viaduct on unmapped paths up Lake Down to Sourton Tors. The route then descends steadily to briefly join the West Devon Way before skirting South Down, with views of Meldon Reservoir to cross the West Okement River. Passing under the picturesque Meldon Viaduct the route leaves the road to descend steeply to cross back over the river before climbing through woods to rejoin the West Devon Way to Meldon Village before passing under and then onto the Granite Way to the starting point. (Toilets en route at Meldon Reservoir Car Park) Note: the route cannot be shortened by taking the path that crosses it at SX 532 894 - the Granite Way is in a cutting and the other path is on a bridge. 11.8km, 411m ascent/descent, 2:50hrs. A short climb to the summit of Steeperton Tor is followed by a descent to ford Steeperton Brook. The path heads E, occasionally hard to follow, skirting Hound Tor towards Little Hound Tor before descending above Small Brook by White Hill. From here the route follows the Bridle Way, actually little more than sheep tracks, across the flanks of Cosdon Beacon, fording Lady Brook. Near a cluster of gorse bushes another path heads downhill to a standing stone (not on map) then drops left to join a path heading back to Belstone via a foot bridge over the Taw. 16.3km, 424m ascent/descent, 4hrs. Passing Lower Halstock the path continues to climb with improving views before dropping to cross the River again at Cullever Steps. The final climb passes Winter Tor to cross Belstone Common before dropping down into the wild looking valley of the River Taw to return to Belstone Village. 14.4km, 384m ascent/descent, 3:20hrs.
