  • After moving from Greenwich in 1947 in search of darker skies 200 people worked at The Observatory. The ‘night observers' were on duty every night when the sky was clear and the Moon not too bright. Their job was to line up the telescope and expose a photograph for five minutes up to an hour or more. It was precision work which required much care and skill. Cold was a great enemy, since the domes had to be unheated to prevent currents of warm air blurring the photographs. In 1990 The Observatory closed its doors at Herstmonceux and moved to Cambridge, leaving the historic telescopes behind.. repair and upgrading of the buildings and telescopes was completed in 2004. It is now a Grade II* listed monument. Alongside the historic telescopes which you can look through there are over 100 interactive hands-on exhibits and exhibitions. During my own dark night visit I could see Venus shining brightly without the need for the giant telescope next to the trig.
