  • Nice walk on fpaths around edge of orderly neat orchard to trig at corner of tall trees. 1 mile to NW is Blood Point on the River Great Stour, beieved to be the site of the scene of King Alfred's famous viscous and bloody defeat of a Viking invasion force and often taken to be the Royal Navy's first successful engagement of an enemy. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records in 851 "The Heathen men, for the first time took up their quarters over winter in Thanet and in the same year came 350 ships to the mouth of the Thames, and took Canterbury and London by storm. . . King Athelstan and ealderman Ealhere fought in ships and slew a great army at Sandwich in Kent and captured nine ships and put others to flight".
