Mapping: Google Maps, Bing/OS Mapping and Open Topo Mapping

Hi All

As of April 2025 the site defaults to Open Topo mapping for all new visitors. This is due to a change with Google’s billing policy for map use.

Prior to March 2025 Google gave us $200 per month of free mapping, and this was sufficient for the site. However from March 2025 this was withdrawn by Google and replaced with 10,000 free maps per month. Apparently this is not sufficient for the site and we started incuring charges which would have quickly bankrupt us.

So we have made two changes to reduce this cost pressure.

  1. All non-members are now served Open Topo mapping by default – this is free and really quite good.
  2. Google mapping is limited to 400 maps per day for members only.
  3. Bing/OS mapping is unlimited for members only, but is due to expire in June 2025.

So now only signed in members get the Google Maps as an option and this is now limited.

I hope this is OK
