  • Jan 1st 2015. 6.15 am on 'summit' Faced with an 8 hour drive home I was keen to maintain the tradition of climbing something on New Year's day (last year had been a bit bigger- Kilimanjaro) so tip-toed out of my brother's house in Bowness at 5.20 am - encouraged by the rain having stopped. Deserted road walk for 2 miles -street lit for half way. No access right up this hill so to avoid houses, especially in the dark, chose a direct line up through fields from fpath to SE. Lots of sheep's eyes glinting back off my torch beam. Mushy bog underfoot - wet feet (in trainers) then mist dropped and strong drizzle. wood on top with high barbed wire topped deer fence around it. Found a gate in and a way through the trees to rocky slab summit. 6.15 am -an early summit. Took more direct track down to west to road. Abandoned idea of adding extra peaks as rain got stronger and torch beam got fainter.Road walk back to Bowness.
