  • Chris Pearson says...
  • Penrith Beacon, a sandstone monument built in 1719, on a spot where beacons have been lit in times of war and emergency since the time of Henry VIII. The beacon forewarned of numerous Scottish raids over the centuries. In 1980 inter-city electric locomotive 86255 was named ‘Penrith Beacon’, recognising the watch kept over a town with a long railway history. Visitors to the Beacon used to sign a book in the porch of Carroline Cottage further along Beacon Edge road from the start of the current permissive path.
