- Have walked to Barbury Castle/Hill over 100 times; often from home in Swindon. As far as I can tell from my records this is the earliestdate There is a good free car park near the top for those wanting a shorter walk. Unfortunately the old cafe has now burnt down.

- My 200th Dewey Notable. Morning rain stopped early despite web forecast so snatched a dry 3 mile ramble in wellies from Hackpen Hill car park along an unmuddy as it turned out Ridgeway (Britain's oldest road?).This section is a byway and as the signs indicate can be driven for recreation 1st May to 30 Sept. (presumably to try to prevent a mudbath on one of Britains Long Distance footpaths when winter rains and 4x4's meet) In 1996 a geophysical survey revealed traces of 40 hut circles inside the castle. A reconstruction of an Iron Age roundhouse was built on the site in 2006 but was destroyed by vandals in October 2008.( a pity they didnt renovate the defensive ditch and bank at the same time, complete with armed lookouts?) Tucked in the dip south is Barbury Castle International Horses Cross county eventing (in summer)with course designed by Mark Phillips. Below to the north can be seen the old aircraft hangers housing the overspill and oversized British Science Museum collection. Must be a fascinating treasure trove -apparantly there is even a (decomissioned) nuclear missile amongst the giant farm machinery, buses and old aeroplanes.
