  • Chris Pearson says...
  • Simple track over the top. Just north of Ryde -a Cinque port. The Cinque confederation is a unique association of maritime towns and villages in Kent and East Sussex, dating back 1000 years. In the centuries before the Tudor Kings of England first developed a standing navy, the men and ships of the Cinque Ports provided a fleet to meet the military and transportation needs of their Royal masters. The medieval coastline with its large bay, enabled ships to come up to the port. Storms in the English Channel in the thirteenth century, coupled with reclamation of the bay, brought huge quantities of gravel through longshore drift along the coast, blocking the port entrance. The sea is now 2 miles away.
