• Visited this in 1989, whilst working as a Ranger for the Mersey Valley Partnership. The only surviving castle in North Cheshire, has a personal connection for me, as one of my ancestors was the brother of Nigel of Cotentin, who built the original motte and bailey castle in 1071. The front part of the Castle was later converted into a courthouse, and this in turn became a pub, The Castle. If you want to get to the high point and have a look around the castle ruins ( not much, after it was largely demolished during the English Civil War), there are occasionally open days when the public is allowed in, and you could always try asking at the bar at other times.
