GPSU,
an excellent and affordable (c.a. £20) resource allowing management of waypoints, routes and trackpoints against a digital map background. Its the one I tend to use most as it has the major advantage of being able to hold more than 500 waypoints at one time. As its shareware there is also a limited free trial version, but its well worth the upgrade.
Ozi-Explorer
a very professional but more expensive (c.a. $65) resource allowing management of waypoints, routes and trackpoints against a digital map background. As its shareware there is also a limited free trial version.
MagWay; a good basic free waypoint editor for Magellan GPS units, with the advantage of being able to convert travel information into routes / waypoints with a little bit of extra free software.
Magellan DataSave; a bog-standard free waypoint editor from Magellan.
How to make your own Data Transfer cable. This is quite easy to make, works well and is much cheaper than the one from Magellan.
For a different example see: http://www.kolumbus.fi/ari.torpstrom/mag315.htm It is in Finnish but the pictures are self explanatory.
Ordnance Survey have a Get-a-map service; providing a free mapping service of up to 10 maps at various scales subject to accepting their terms and conditions which include displaying a copyright acknowledgement. I personally find these too small to be of much use.
Better sources of free maps are or . Click on the map and zoom in to 1:50000 scale and then save the image to your hard-drive. A nifty alternative is to use aerial photos from MultiMap-Photos The example here is Helvellyn with 1:50k map overlay!
Otherwise, I've found the free trial version of Image Assembler very useful for stitching these maps or digital photos together.
I've tried NiMH batteries (1.2v 1500mA) and found they last around 5 hours tops, presumably NiCd are worse.
The best thing I've found are Energizer's AA Lithium batteries, they last for ages & are very very light.
